On the women’s side, the must see match will have new mom Kim Clijsters against world no. 2 Serena Williams in Arthur Ashe stadium. The winner of this match will be the one to beat and is almost assured the 2009 women’s U.S. Open singles crown. Incidentally, Serena will team with sister Venus Williams in the women’s double final. This is their first U.S. Open doubles final appearance since 1999. If they win, it will be their 10th Grand Slam doubles title. The Williams are undefeated in Grand Slam titles at 9-0.
The other women’s semi-final will feature nineteen year old world #9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark against Belgian Yanina Wickmayer. It was Wozniacki who ended the American Cinderella story of Melanie Oudin. Incidently, Oudin was inking her signature to a new endorsement deal right before the Wozniacki match. She can take consolation in the $175,000 prize money for her quarterfinal appearance and will make a dramatic leap in the rankings. At only 17, she will be a force to be reckoned with for some time after taking down Nadia Petrova, Maria Sharapova and Elena Dementieva on her amazing run.
