Wilander Out As Davis Cup Captain In Sweden

Mats Wilander has quit as captain of Sweden’s Davis Cup team.

Wilander, who was briefly ranked No. 1 in the 1980s, led Sweden to the Davis Cup semifinals in 2007. The Swedes also reached the quarterfinals three times under Wilander and assistant coach Joakim Nystrom.

Swedish Tennis Federation chief Henrik Kallen on Tuesday thanked them both and said a search will begin for their replacements.

Murray has been plagued by the problem over the last month but played three matches in three days in the Davis Cup loss by Poland last weekend.

A spokesman for the 22-year-old has revealed he will return in weeks and not months.

Murray has already qualified for the end-of-season ATP World Tour Finals.

Murray saw the same specialist who looked after him when he hurt his right wrist two years ago and missed three months.

That November date is the one significant event remaining in 2009, all the more so for Murray as it takes place in London for the first time this year, while January’s Australian Open is already figuring in the Scot’s thinking.

Speaking after the Davis Cup tie on Sunday, he said: “The pain’s bearable but I need to decide what to do next because it’s such a short turnaround at the end of the year and the preparations for Australia have to be very good because of the conditions so I need to decide when I can fit in a long break.

Czech Republic reached the Davis Cup final for the first time when Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych beat Marin Cilic and Lovro Zovko 6-1 6-3 6-4 to open an unassailable 3-0 lead over Croatia on Saturday. The Czech doubles pair won in two hours and 15 minutes.

They will travel to Spain, winners in 2000, 2004 and 2008 for December’s final, most likely on clay, after the Spaniards took a 3-0 lead over Israel in Murcia on Saturday.

The former Czechoslovakia won the Davis Cup in 1980 by beating Italy with a team led by Ivan Lendl but this is the first time the Czech Republic have reached the final.

The Czech Republic had beaten nine-time champions France and three times runners-up Argentina to reach the semi-finals while Croatia had got past the United States as they tried to reach the final for the second time in five years.

In other Davis Cup news, Tommy Robredo and Feliciano Lopez upset Israeli doubles specialists Jonathan Erlich and Andy Ram 7-6 6-7 6-4 6-2 on Saturday to put champions Spain through to their fifth Davis Cup final in 10 years. Juan Carlos Ferrero and David Ferrer had opened a 2-0 lead for the home side with crushing victories in Friday’s singles before Robredo and Lopez gave Spain an unassailable 3-0 advantage in the best-of-five tie on the clay in Murcia.

The World No. 1, and U.S. Open runner up, arrived in Genoa, Italy today to begin practice for Switzerland’s Davis Cup World Group Playoff tie on the red clay of the 4,200-seat Valletta Cambiaso Club.

Federer joins Stansislas Wawrinka, Marco Chiudunelli, Michael Lammer and Stephane Bohli on the Swiss squad. Host Italy fields Andreas Seppi, Simone Bolelli, Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace.

It marks Federer’s first Davis Cup appearance since the 2008 World Group Playoffs when he won a singles match and partnered Stanislas Wawrinka to win the doubles in a win over Belgum. Federer owns a 35-11 Davis Cup record overall, including a 25-6 mark in singles.
